Trail Maintenance, Construction and Assessment
It takes a village…
I (Jeremy) started maintaining trails as a kid in Hendersonville, NC. Land owners on the mountain near my home let riders freely use trails through their property. Keeping brush cleared and the occasional reroute was just part of the fun.
Fast forward to 2020 and Covid took the world by storm. I was volunteering with the Greater Clemson Mountain Biker’s Club in Clemson, SC and then became the club’s Volunteer Coordinator working with Clemson Issaqueena Experimental Forest, SWU Trails, Fant’s Grove and the towns of Clemson and Central to manage 80+ miles of multi-use trails.
In 2023, I became the Coordinator of the McDowell Tech Trail School in Marion, NC which aims to teach trail construction and sustainable maintenance to land managers, volunteers and professionals.
I also serve as a Trail Crew Leader for the G5 Trail Collective and lead work days as well as donate shuttle rides for various community events. Together we keep the trails surrounding Old Fort running smooth.
Build it.
Mountain Top Shuttles is proud to have subcontracted with other trail builders in WNC. We’ve built tens of miles of trails with Long Cane Trails, worked on the iconic Heartbreak Ridge Trail with Geosculpt Trail Designs, built short access trails for local landowners with Appalachian Land Stewards, built new trail with G5 Trail Collective and McDowell Tech Trail School on Newberry Creek in Pisgah National Forest, built new trail from top of lower Catawba Falls over to the upper falls, worked on the new Stagecoach trail from the Old Fort Picnic Area, and more…
Learn it.
McDowell Tech Trail School is building a campus in downtown Old Fort to open in Fall 2024. Through our partnership with the US Forest Service and the G5 Trail Collective we have access to a beautiful forest with tons of trail maintenance and construction opportunities.
Additionally, the Friends of the Fonta Flora Trail are building multi-use connector trail from downtown to the Gateway Trailhead as well as connection other parts of town.
There are so many ways to learn and volunteer. Check out the G5 volunteer page here for local workdays.
